Lander Veterinary Clinic externships allow you to apply your classroom lessons to the real world. As a Lander extern, you’ll get to take your hands-on training to the next level, testing out your new skills under the supervision of professional veterinarians.
Over 100 extern students arrive here each year from all over the world. Our two dormitory style rooms at the Clinic have two single beds and one roll away bed with all linens provided. A maximum of four students can be accommodated at one time. Full kitchen and laundry facilities are offered and a shared shower/restroom area is available for student use. There is high speed internet access at the Clinic and full access to a library of books and journals for the benefit of students.
Students are expected to bring a pair of boots and a few pairs of coveralls when they come, although we do have extras of each if necessary. A rectal thermometer, a stethoscope and ultrasound equipment (if available) are also highly recommended to pack in your suitcase.
Clinic hours are Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 5 pm, and Saturday 8 -12. Doctor’s schedules often begin and end outside of clinic hours. We also rotate a doctor on call after regular hours for emergency service 24/7. Students are encouraged to participate in all emergency calls.
Students should arrive the Sunday prior to beginning their rotations for Clinic orientation and getting settled in. The first day of your rotation is usually booked as a sick cow and emergency call day. After day one students are booked to travel with different veterinarians for herd fertility each day in the morning and are assigned to afternoon work as it arises.
Due to the overwhelming student demand, Lander Veterinary Clinic charges a housing fee for veterinary students. The fee will be $250/week for the duration of the student’s stay. This fee will be waived for students attending accredited schools in the US and Canada. The maximum allowable weeks for an externship at the Clinic for all students will be 4 weeks.
We will limit our externship positions strictly to third and fourth year veterinary students.
