The reproductive potential of each newborn calf is enormous and contributes directly to beef and dairy farm profitability. As a producer, now you can maximize the impact of superior animals in your herd through advanced embryo transfer (ET) technology, achieving faster genetic growth — more calves per donor per year.
At Lander Veterinary Clinic, we’ve taken food animal reproductive physiology to the next level. A brand-new facility has been constructed at our Turlock, California headquarters devoted entirely to embryo transfer services, using the science of theriogenology to identify and evaluate donor traits for superior yield and improved interval to conception.
Conventional ET
- Superovulation
- Nonsurgical embryo collection
- Embryo freezing
- Nonsurgical embryo transfer
Conventional embryo transfer (ET) is offered by Lander Vet specialists on-farm or in-house at our new embryo transfer facility. The ET process for cattle begins with “superovulation” to produce multiple oocytes (unfertilized egg cells) from designated cows and heifers. Upon ovum maturation, the female donor is artificially inseminated.
Fertilized embryos are collected by a non-surgical flushing process and evaluated by our experienced lab specialists, followed by classification for quality scores and sexing. Embryos then undergo either nonsurgical transfer into recipients or frozen to be transferred later.
A primary benefit of conventional (in vivo) embryo transfer for dairy and beef producers is to yield superior quality cattle and significantly improved herd pregnancy rates for future generations.
InVitro Fertilization ET
- Superovulation
- Ovum pickup
- Embryo culture
- Nonsurgical embryo transfer
- Embryo freezing
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is offered by Lander Vet with a specialized ovum pick up (OPU) harvest process directly from a donor cow or heifer. IVF embryo transfer differs from our conventional ET process, by creating embryos in the laboratory, from sorted and classified oocytes and then fertilizing them with bull semen in a Petri dish.
Producer benefits of OPU in IVF process are many, such as: collection through the first trimester, up to 50 live calves per donor per year, division of oocytes fertilized by different bulls and more efficient use of sexed semen. After oocytes are selected, matured and fertilized, in vitro embryo culture begins a highly complex process.
Lander Vet specialists transfer fresh IVF embryos into synchronized recipients using nonsurgical procedures or freeze the embryos to be transferred later. A major benefit to Central Valley beef and dairy breeders using OPU/IVF technology is the creation of pregnancies from a donor gestating her natural calf.
This advantage allows producers to generate offspring from elite cows and heifers and keeps them on an annual production cycle to calve on schedule with the rest of the herd – more profitability to your farm’s bottom line.
